Modest swimwear has come a long way. The "burkini bag" you bought in 2019 is not the burkini you should buy in 2026 — fabrics have improved, fit has been re-engineered, and coverage options now exist on a real spectrum. This guide walks through everything you should think about before you buy, in plain language.
1. Pick your coverage level first
Modest swim isn't one thing. We see four common levels:
- Full burkini (most coverage): head covering attached, full sleeves, full pants, knee-length tunic. Best for conservative beach/pool settings or strong sun protection.
- Two-piece burkini: separate top + pants, often with separate hijab/cap. Easier to dress in. Mix-and-match colors.
- Long-sleeve modest swim (no head): full sleeves and longer hem, paired with your own swim hijab. Popular at private pools or with friends only.
- Modest one-piece: long-sleeve one-piece with shorts attached, no head covering. The least coverage of the four.
2. Fabric is everything (this is what most cheap burkinis get wrong)
The two performance fabrics that matter:
- Polyamide (nylon) blend with elastane: holds shape after multiple wears, dries fast, doesn't fade in chlorine.
- Polyester with UPF rating: better sun protection, slightly heavier when wet but more durable.
Avoid: cotton-blend "burkinis" that say "lightweight" — they soak up water, sag, and fade after one season. If a burkini feels like a dress fabric, pass.
3. Fit secrets we wish someone had told us
- Size up the top, true to size on bottoms: the top is where most modesty issues happen. Going up one size eliminates clinging across the chest.
- Look for thumbholes: the sleeve stays down when you raise your arms. Sounds small, changes everything.
- Drawstring waist: cinched tunic doesn't ride up when you swim.
- High-neck or zip-front: zip-front is easier to put on wet but check the zip is YKK-quality so it doesn't rust.
4. Pool vs ocean — the materials matter
Chlorine breaks down cheap elastane in 5-10 swims. Salt water is gentler but UV is harsher. If you're a regular pool swimmer, pay the extra $5-10 for a chlorine-resistant blend. If you're at the ocean once a year, almost any modest swim will hold up.
5. The drying-in-public problem (and how to solve it)
Wet burkini + walk to the car = clings, drips, and uncomfortable. Two fixes:
- Bring a dry second top to throw on over the burkini for the walk. Adds 30 seconds, removes 100% of the awkward.
- Buy a quick-dry blend. Some 2026 fabrics are dry to the touch in 6-8 minutes.
6. What about the gym pool / lap swim?
For active swimming you want a more athletic cut. We carry separate sport hijabs designed for water and a sub-collection of fitted athletic burkinis. The looser tunic style is fine for leisure but drags in the water during laps.
